Real talk, how comforting is garlic bread? I don’t know a person who doesn’t like it. Aside from maybe the finish line of a celiac vampire marathon or convention, I can’t think of a situation where her crispy, buttery, garlic goodness wouldn’t be an addition. welcome. The call is universal. So universal, in fact, that when a (fake) tweet surfaced in 2015 from rapper DMX suggesting that garlic bread was, in his opinion, greater than sex, that was memo to the end of the Internet and back – the idea that DMX was talking about our collective truth about garlic bread was just too good to ignore.

I was recently eating a wonderful bowl of pasta made by my wife and, lamenting that I didn’t have a piece of The Official Best Friend of Pasta Since Forever, I decided to cut one out of a hamburger bun, butter and a little garlic salt. It wasn’t mind blowing, but honestly it wasn’t that bad. It did the trick. And more importantly, it got me thinking: if you were in a hurry, what could you really be successful at making garlic bread?

The bare minimum of research turned out this roasted garlic butter recipe house kingpin and former hock croaker Martha Stewart, who looked tasty and also looked like something that would just be handy to have in the fridge. I decided to make this butter (it turned out to be very easy / delicious, if you don’t take anything else off this insane exercise please let it be the roasted garlic butter) apply -lip it on various breads, put them in the oven, and record the results for posterity.

And listen – before some Italians screw my ass over that this isn’t the right way to make garlic bread or that none of those things actually make up garlic bread in a Meaningful meaning, let me say for the record that … isn’t this a serious business. This is simply a friendly, experimental collaboration between yours truly and Martha Stewart (+ my ever-present inspirational co-pilot, Marijuana).

garlic bread multigrain bread

Multi-grain bread

garlic pita bread

Pita

naan garlic bread

Naan

Pretty good, although a hamburger bun is deceptively dense and therefore required a second buttering to really get there. Note: Martha Stewart’s recipe is a major improvement over the butter / garlic salt combo mentioned above.

Goal: 8/10, unhealthy amount of butter needed but also who cares it’s garlic bread not quinoa.

garlic butter hot dog bun

Hot dog bread

Similar density problems to hamburger buns, and the bread surface makes it difficult for butter to penetrate effectively. Dig shape though – kind of like eating a lobster roll without the lobster, which is more fun than it looks.

Pizza crust

Ok so I know nobody’s really going redo their pizza crust in a situation like this, but even just spreading the butter on the crust took something positive to the next level – my wife usually doesn’t even eat a pizza crust, and when I do went to grab a piece of her plate, I looked up to see her glance at me “fuck around and find out” and brandish a knife.

Goal: 10/10, eat your fucking heart Papa John.

Flour tortilla

Again, I avoided the oven, because putting a tortilla in the oven is like putting a dog in an elevator – there are situations where it has to be done, but it goes against the laws of nature. and should be avoided whenever possible. Instead, I spread a generous amount of butter over the tortilla, toast it in a skillet, and fold it up a bit, like a quesadilla with no cheese inside. At that point, I quickly repeated the exercise with cheese and enjoyed perhaps the best damn quesadilla of my life – I’m lactose intolerant and the resulting discomfort was worth it. sadness.

Goal: 11/10, would eat and call it “Mexican Garlic Cheesy Bread” again.
