As the town of Sioux Falls grows, so does its food scene.
While a handful of businesses have closed since Jan. 1 — including Cody’s Smokehouse, Andy’s Affiliated Foods, Daylight Donuts, Twister Sisters Sweetz and Jacky’s Restaurant on 8th Street — more than twenty restaurants and bakeries have opened or plan to open. open this year.

Newly opened restaurants
swamp daddy
Swamp Daddy has moved to the hallway of the Jones421 building in downtown Sioux Falls. The Louisiana-style restaurant now offers an expanded menu, beer and wine, and a dining room that seats approximately 80 people.

Diving
The Dive is a new pop-up restaurant that opened in February from the Gaslight Lounge kitchen. Owners Allen Wright and Jeff Von Holtum hope to expand the idea of pop-up restaurants and open additional temporary locations around Sioux Falls.

Wood-fired pizza from Papa Woody
The downtown Sioux Falls pizzeria closed its Jones421 location earlier this year to open in a new, larger space at The Cascade at Falls Park. Papa Woody’s is now a full-service restaurant with an expanded menu, and the owners plan to add a full bar when approved for a liquor license.

Charlie’s Pizza
Charlie’s Pizza, a longtime Yankton staple, opened a location in Sioux Falls after a 30-year absence. Yankton’s Charlie’s Pizza is the oldest continuously operating pizzeria in South Dakota.

at Freddy’s
Freddy’s Frozen Custard and Steakburgers, a Kansas-based chain, opened the first of its two Sioux Falls locations in April at Dawley Farms in East Sioux Falls. The second location is slated to open next year on the Empire Mall campus.

Dave and Busters
The long-awaited arcade bar and restaurant Dave & Buster’s opened this spring at Lake Lorraine. The menu includes the chain’s famous voodoo pasta and nachos, and patrons can play 100 different games while watching sporting events on 18 TV screens.

Sioux Falls’ first Nautical Bowl franchise opened near the Empire Mall this spring. The menu includes a smoothie and juice bar offering acai bowls and more.

Roots of Brazil
The family business Roots of Brasil opened at the end of April. The restaurant offers dishes like frango risotto, Caribbean chicken, egg burgers, and other traditional Brazilian dishes centered around family mealtime.

Santo flying
This new taco bar located in the Jones421 building on Philips Avenue is inspired by Mexican wrestlers El Santo and Jimmy “Superfly” Snuka. Flying Santo serves tacos, quesadillas, nachos, burritos and bowls as well as Mexican beer and street corn from Sonoran.

T-Juanita
T-Juanita Street Food and Cheladas have taken over space from Jacky’s restaurant on Eighth Street. The multicultural menu features many Mexican and seafood dishes.

Pizzeria
Pizzashop opened in early July, selling whole and sliced pizzas, and other Italian dishes like pasta, focaccia sandwiches and calzones. The fast-casual restaurant is in Empire Place behind Chick-fil-A.

The fast food franchise recently opened its third location in Sioux Falls near I-229 and 10th Street. The menu includes chicken strips and fries, wings, sandwiches, wraps, milkshakes and the ever-classic chicken and waffles.

Planned opening: mid-August 2022
This new gluten-free and vegan bakery gets a storefront at The Bridges in Sioux Falls and expands into a bistro that will sell custom baked goods and cakes as well as take-out hot dishes, salads and sandwiches.

‘Brosia Bowl
Scheduled opening: End of summer 2022
This vegan restaurant will soon open its storefront in the Jones421 building downtown. ‘Brosia Bowl offers items like salads, cereal bowls, smoothie bowls and breakfast burritos, and it all comes in biodegradable packaging.

The Michoakanita
Scheduled opening: End of summer
The opening of La Michoakanita, a Mexican artisan ice cream shop run by the owner of Giliberto’s, has been delayed for permits and renovations but is still expected to open this year. The store is right next to Giliberto’s on Minnesota Avenue and will offer frozen treats made from fresh fruit.

Fazoli’s
Scheduled opening: Late fall 2022
Fazoli plans to open its second location in Sioux Falls later this fall. The new east side space will include a drive-thru and event room, and the menu will feature Italian dishes like baked pasta, subs, pizza and breadsticks.

Maribella Ristorante
Planned opening: End of autumn 2022
The owners of R Wine Bar & Kitchen and Brix Wine Bar plan to open a new Italian restaurant, Maribella Ristorante, in downtown Washington Square later this fall. The upscale restaurant will also have a full bar.

Neighborhood Restaurant in the Cathedral Quarter
Planned opening: Unknown timing
A refurbished historic building in the Cathedral Quarter will soon house a new restaurant or café, with terrace seating on the ground floor and on the roof, but construction delays and the need to find a tenant have forced the owner to push back its planned opening schedule.

Tre Lounge
